What is the Meningitis B vaccine?

The Meningitis B vaccine (Bexsero) is used to help protect against Neisseria meningitidis group B, a serious bacterial infection associated with meningitis B. It is a prescription-only vaccine supplied as an injection in a pre-filled syringe.

Who may be eligible for the Meningitis B vaccine?

Suitability is assessed before vaccination. Inclusion criteria:

  • Children aged 2 and above, and adults.
  • Children 2 years and over who have not received immunisation through the national NHS vaccination programme
  • Vaccination for occupational health reasons
  • Vaccination for travel purposes

Who cannot have the Meningitis B vaccine under this service?

Exclusion criteria:

  • Under 2 years old
  • Confirmed anaphylactic reaction to a previous dose of the vaccine or any of its ingredients
  • Sensitivity to kanamycin
  • Acute severe febrile illness
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding

How is the vaccine given?

The vaccine is given by intramuscular injection, usually into the deltoid muscle of the upper arm. For young children, it may be given into the anterolateral thigh. It should not be given where there is thrombocytopenia or a clotting disorder that would make intramuscular injection unsuitable.

How many doses are needed?

For Bexsero, the dose is 0.5 ml and two doses are required, given at least 1 month apart. The need for booster doses has not been established.

What side effects can happen after the Meningitis B vaccine?

Common side effects can include:

  • pain, swelling and redness at the injection site
  • headache
  • diarrhoea
  • nausea
  • malaise
  • muscle pain
  • joint pain
  • fatigue
  • chills

In infants and children up to 10 years of age, commonly reported reactions may also include diarrhoea and vomiting, sleepiness, unusual crying, headache, arthralgia and rash. Febrile seizures have been reported rarely.
