How the Wegovy Tablet Works

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It mimics a natural gut hormone your body releases after eating, reducing appetite, slowing how quickly your stomach empties and helping you feel fuller for longer.

Semaglutide is a peptide, and peptides are normally broken down by stomach acid before they can be absorbed – which is why, until now, it has only been available as an injection for weight loss. The Wegovy tablet solves this with an absorption enhancer called SNAC, which temporarily raises the pH immediately around the tablet, protecting the semaglutide long enough for a portion to reach the bloodstream.

This is the same technology already used in Rybelsus, the oral semaglutide tablet licensed for type 2 diabetes since 2020, so oral semaglutide delivery has several years of real-world use behind it.

For the full mechanism and trial evidence, read our complete Wegovy pill UK guide.

How to Take Wegovy Tablets

Because absorption depends on precise stomach conditions, how you take the tablet matters enormously. This is not optional guidance.

  • Take one tablet first thing in the morning, fasted
  • Swallow whole with no more than half a glass of plain water
  • Do not split, crush or chew the tablet
  • Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking any other oral medicines
  • Take it at the same time every day

Taking the tablet with food, with too much water, or too close to other oral medicines substantially reduces how much medicine actually enters your system. If you know you will not reliably manage a fasted early-morning dose every day, the weekly injection is likely to give you a better result – and our prescribers will tell you so at assessment.

Expected Results

In the OASIS 4 trial, adults taking the 25 mg dose lost an average of 16.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary considerably.

Who Can Be Prescribed Wegovy Tablets?

The Wegovy pill is a prescription-only medicine and is not suitable for everyone. Private eligibility at Slinic generally requires:

  • BMI of 30 or above, with no qualifying condition needed, or
  • BMI of 27 or above with at least one weight-related condition – type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, obstructive sleep apnoea, NAFLD, PCOS or obesity-related osteoarthritis

Lower BMI thresholds apply for patients of South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean family background, in line with NICE guidance.

Who Wegovy Tablets Are Not Suitable For

Oral semaglutide is contraindicated in patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2, known hypersensitivity to semaglutide, active eating disorders, severe gastrointestinal disease, or type 1 diabetes. It is not licensed in pregnancy or breastfeeding, and a two-month washout is advised before trying to conceive.

Caution is required in patients with a history of pancreatitis or gallbladder disease. Patients who cannot commit to the fasted morning routine should consider the injection instead.

Medicines in the UK are regulated by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

Wegovy Tablet Doses and Titration

The Wegovy pill titrates through four strengths: 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg, with four weeks at each step before increasing. This gradual escalation is designed to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.

Most patients settle at the 25 mg maintenance dose. Patients should not change their dose without appropriate clinical guidance. Dose progression is reviewed by our prescribers at your free monthly check-in.

Wegovy Tablet Side Effects

As with all medicines, the Wegovy pill can cause side effects. The most commonly reported are gastrointestinal, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and reduced appetite, and these often settle as treatment continues.

Read our Wegovy pill side effects guide for what to expect at each stage and how to manage them. Full details are provided in the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine, available through the electronic Medicines Compendium.

Wegovy Tablet or Wegovy Injection?

Both contain semaglutide and both are available at Slinic. The tablet is needle-free and needs no refrigeration, but requires a disciplined fasted morning routine. The injection is once weekly with no dosing restrictions around food, and produces slightly greater average weight loss in trials.

Compare the two in our Wegovy UK guide, which covers the injection and the tablet side by side, or see our weight loss injections UK guide for the wider picture.

Important Note

The Wegovy pill is not a substitute for healthy lifestyle choices, but it can support the results of a weight management plan where diet and exercise alone have been insufficient. It must be prescribed and monitored by a healthcare professional. Follow all dosage instructions carefully and attend regular medical reviews so treatment can be tracked and adjusted as needed.
