How to Take the Wegovy Pill Correctly UK 2026: Step-by-Step Guide
In short
Take one Wegovy pill first thing each morning on an empty stomach, swallowed whole with no more than 120ml of plain water. Then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other medicines. Do not crush, chew or split it. Getting this routine right isn’t optional — food and other liquids dramatically reduce how much of the medicine your body absorbs.
The step-by-step routine
- Take it first thing in the morning, as soon as you wake, before eating or drinking anything else.
- Swallow the tablet whole with a small sip of plain water — no more than 120ml.
- Do not crush, chew, split or dissolve it — the tablet must reach your stomach intact.
- Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything other than water, or taking any other oral medicine.
- After 30 minutes, carry on with your day as normal — breakfast, coffee, other medicines.
Why the routine matters so much
Semaglutide is a peptide, and peptides are normally broken down in the stomach before they can be absorbed. The Wegovy pill uses an absorption enhancer called SNAC that briefly creates the right conditions in the stomach for a portion of the dose to pass into the bloodstream. That window is narrow and easily disrupted — food, other liquids and even too much water all reduce absorption. Following the routine exactly is what protects the effectiveness of every single dose. Taking it with breakfast, or with a big glass of water, can substantially reduce how well it works.
Why only water — and only 120ml
Only plain water, and no more than 120ml (about half a cup). Not coffee, tea, juice, milk, squash or sparkling water — anything other than plain water interferes with absorption. And more water isn’t better here: a larger volume changes the stomach environment the tablet relies on, so stick to a small sip.
The 30-minute wait explained
After swallowing the tablet, the semaglutide needs uninterrupted time to be absorbed. Eating, drinking anything other than water, or taking other oral medicines within that 30-minute window all cut absorption. Set a timer if it helps — the wait is the difference between a dose that works properly and one that doesn’t. If you can wait longer than 30 minutes, that’s fine; 30 minutes is the minimum.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Taking it with breakfast — the single most common error. It must be on a genuinely empty stomach.
- Washing it down with coffee or juice — plain water only.
- Using a big glass of water — keep it to 120ml or less.
- Eating too soon — the 30-minute wait is a minimum, not a target.
- Crushing or splitting the tablet — this destroys the absorption mechanism.
- Taking it later in the day — it’s designed for a fasted morning stomach.
- Storing it in a pill organiser — humidity can affect it; keep it in its original packaging.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, skip it and take your next tablet the following morning as normal. Do not take two in one day to make up for it — doubling up won’t help and can increase side effects. If you miss several days in a row, speak to your prescriber before continuing, as they may want to review or restart your dose. Some people find a morning phone reminder helps it become automatic.
Taking other medicines
Because the pill needs a clear 30-minute window, any other oral medicines you take in the morning should wait until after that window ends. Semaglutide also slows stomach emptying, which can affect how some other medicines are absorbed — so tell your prescriber about everything you take, including anything over-the-counter, so they can advise on timing. If you’re on the oral contraceptive pill and experience vomiting or diarrhoea, use additional protection and speak to your prescriber.
Making it a habit
The pill works best when the routine is consistent, so build it into your morning: tablet on waking, small sip of water, set a 30-minute timer, then breakfast when it goes off. Taking it at the same time each day makes it automatic and protects your results. Frequently asked questions
How do you take the Wegovy pill?
Take one tablet first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, swallowed whole with no more than 120ml of plain water. Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other medicines. Do not crush, chew or split it.
Can I take the Wegovy pill with food?
No. It must be taken on an empty stomach. Food dramatically reduces how much semaglutide your body absorbs, so taking it with breakfast makes it far less effective.
How much water should I take the Wegovy pill with?
No more than 120ml (about half a cup) of plain water. More water, or any drink other than plain water, reduces absorption.
How long do I wait after taking the Wegovy pill?
At least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything other than water, or taking other oral medicines. Longer is fine; 30 minutes is the minimum.
Can I take the Wegovy pill at night?
No. It should be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, because the fasting window and 30-minute wait are needed for it to be absorbed.
What happens if I take it wrong?
Taking it with food, the wrong drink, too much water, or eating too soon all reduce absorption and can make the dose less effective. If you’re unsure, speak to your prescriber.
Can I crush or split the Wegovy pill?
No. It must be swallowed whole. Crushing, chewing or splitting it destroys the absorption mechanism and stops it working properly.
