What is the Wegovy pill?
The Wegovy pill is a once-daily tablet containing semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It mimics a natural gut hormone your body releases after eating — reducing appetite, slowing how quickly your stomach empties, and helping you feel fuller for longer. Taken alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased activity, it helps you eat less and lose weight over time. Both the pill and the injection deliver semaglutide and work through the same biological mechanism; the difference is purely how the medicine is delivered and how often you take it.
The science: how an oral peptide is absorbed (SNAC)
Semaglutide is a peptide, and peptides are normally broken down by stomach acid before they can be absorbed — which is why, until now, it has only been available as an injection for weight loss. The Wegovy pill solves this with an absorption enhancer called SNAC (sodium N-[8-(2-hydroxybenzoyl) amino] caprylate). SNAC temporarily raises the pH immediately around the tablet in the stomach, protecting the semaglutide long enough for a portion to be absorbed into the bloodstream. This is the same technology already used in Rybelsus, the oral semaglutide tablet licensed for type 2 diabetes since 2020 — so oral semaglutide delivery has several years of real-world use behind it. Because absorption depends on those precise stomach conditions, how you take the tablet matters enormously.
OASIS 4: the clinical evidence
The MHRA approval rests on the OASIS clinical development programme, a series of trials testing oral semaglutide in adults with overweight and obesity. The pivotal trial for the licensed dose was OASIS 4. In it, adults taking the once-daily 25mg tablet lost an average of 16.6% of their starting body weight over 64 weeks, compared with 2.7% for those on placebo. Around 3 in 10 participants lost 20% or more of their body weight. Participants weighed roughly 106kg on average with a BMI of about 38, and also showed improvements in blood-sugar control and cardiovascular risk factors such as cholesterol.
Individual results vary. Trial averages are not a guarantee. Outcomes depend on the dose reached, adherence, how well side effects are tolerated, treatment duration, starting health, and lifestyle support.
Dosing & titration
The pill is started low and increased gradually — a process called titration — to help your body adjust and reduce side effects. It comes in four strengths, with the dose increased about every 30 days as tolerated.

How to take the Wegovy pill correctly
- First thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, before eating or drinking anything else.
- Swallow whole with a small sip of plain water — no more than 120ml. Not coffee, juice, milk or sparkling water.
- Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other oral medicines.
- Do not crush, chew or split the tablet — it must reach your stomach whole to work.

Am I eligible?
- BMI 30 or above — no qualifying condition needed.
- BMI 27–29.9 with a weight-related condition (type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, PCOS, NAFLD).
- Ethnic-group BMI adjustment — for South Asian, Black African/Caribbean, Chinese/East Asian or Middle Eastern backgrounds, lower thresholds may apply (BMI 27.5+ without a condition, or 23+ with one), reflecting elevated metabolic risk at lower BMIs.
- Age 18 or over.
- Not suitable if pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding; personal/family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2; active pancreatitis; or already taking another GLP-1 medicine.
Because semaglutide stays in your system for 5–7 weeks, it should be stopped at least two months before a planned pregnancy.
Side effects
Because it is the same medicine as the injection, side effects are similar — mostly mild-to-moderate gut symptoms (nausea, diarrhoea, constipation) that ease with titration, minus injection-site reactions. Full guidance in our side effects guide.
Is it available on the NHS?
Not yet. At launch the pill is private-only. NICE will assess whether it is cost-effective for NHS use; there is no confirmed timeline, and NHS access is unlikely before 2027–2028 if recommended. See our NHS availability guide. Starting privately does not affect your NHS waiting-list position.
