Mounjaro in Glasgow: The Essential Guide

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is the UK’s most prescribed weight loss injection — producing an average of 22.5% body weight loss at 15mg over 72 weeks in the landmark SURMOUNT-1 trial. For patients in Glasgow and Greater Glasgow and Clyde, access comes through two routes: NHS prescription via tier 3 specialist services (with significant waiting times), or private prescription through a GPhC-registered provider like Slinic with next-day delivery.

This guide covers everything a Glasgow patient needs to know: NHS eligibility and waiting times in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board, how to access private Mounjaro at fixed 2026 prices, eligibility criteria, dosing, and what to expect. NHS prescriptions are free in Scotland — patients receiving Mounjaro or Wegovy on NHS Scotland pay nothing per pen.

Obesity in Glasgow: The Local Picture

Glasgow has an obesity rate of approximately 34% — the highest of any major UK city and significantly above the UK average of 26%. The city’s health challenges are well documented: Glasgow has the highest cardiovascular disease mortality rate and some of the lowest life expectancy figures of any UK city, concentrated in its most deprived areas (Drumchapel, Possil, Springburn, Easterhouse).

The April 2026 NICE cardiovascular approval for Wegovy (BMI 27+ with established CVD, no T2D) is highly relevant for Glasgow given its exceptional cardiovascular disease burden. However, NICE decisions are for England only — Scottish patients should discuss the equivalent SMC cardiovascular pathway with their GP. Private Wegovy through Slinic is available immediately for qualifying Glasgow patients.

NHS Mounjaro in Glasgow: Current Status and Waiting Times

In Scotland, weight loss injections are approved by the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC). Both tirzepatide (Mounjaro) and semaglutide (Wegovy) are SMC-approved.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) SMC approved Tier 3 via GP referral Free — no prescription charge

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde runs tier 3 weight management services across the health board area. Waiting times are typically 12–24 months. Eligibility criteria in Scotland are broadly similar to NICE criteria for England but the specific thresholds are set by NHS Scotland / SMC guidance.

For patients who cannot wait, Slinic is authorised to prescribe and deliver to all Scottish patients. Private prescriptions from Slinic are legally valid in Scotland.

Glasgow is served by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board. Scotland does not use the English ICB structure. Your GP refers you to NHSGGC weight management services. NHS prescriptions are free in Scotland. Private Slinic prescriptions are fully valid in Scotland and delivered next day.

The NHS Bridge Strategy for Glasgow Patients

For patients in Glasgow who are on the NHS waiting list (or want to get on it) while also wanting to start treatment now, the bridge strategy makes clinical sense:

    1. Ask your GP today for a tier 3 weight management referral — this starts the NHS clock
    2. Start Mounjaro privately at Slinic — your medication arrives in 24–48 hours, you begin losing weight while you wait
    3. When your NHS tier 3 place comes through (typically 12–24+ months in Glasgow) — transition to NHS supply, typically at the same dose you’re already on

Starting private treatment does not affect your NHS eligibility or waiting list position. Your Slinic clinician can provide a treatment summary for your NHS tier 3 team when the time comes. See our full NHS Mounjaro guide for more detail →

Who Prescribes Mounjaro in Glasgow — What to Verify Before Ordering

With NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde waiting times of 12–24 months, private demand for Mounjaro in Glasgow is significant. Here is exactly what to verify before ordering from any private provider in Scotland:

What to check Why it matters Slinic status
GPhC registration Legal requirement to dispense Mounjaro in the UK — including Scotland. Verify at pharmacyregulation.org. Any provider who cannot provide a GPhC number should not be trusted. ✅ GPhC No. 1033729
Authorised to prescribe in Scotland GPhC-registered pharmacies based in England can legally prescribe and dispense to Scottish patients — Scotland is part of the UK regulatory framework. Slinic prescribes to patients across all four nations. ✅ Yes — Slinic prescribes and delivers to all Scottish postcodes

LegitScript certification International online pharmacy verification. Important for Scottish patients using online providers to ensure the provider is legitimate. ✅ Yes

Eli Lilly authorised supply Must be MHRA-licensed Mounjaro from Eli Lilly’s authorised UK supply chain. The MHRA seized 20 million counterfeit weight loss injection doses worth £45M in 2025. Never purchase from unregistered social media sellers. ✅ Eli Lilly authorised supply only

Scotland’s NHS Governance: What Glasgow Patients Need to Understand

Scotland’s NHS operates differently from England’s — and understanding this helps Glasgow patients navigate both NHS and private options more effectively:

Factor England (NHS England) Scotland (NHS Scotland / Glasgow)
Clinical approval body NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) SMC (Scottish Medicines Consortium)
Mounjaro approval NICE TA1026 (June 2025) SMC approved — separate process, broadly similar criteria
Wegovy approval NICE TA875 (2023) + cardiovascular April 2026 SMC approved — separate cardiovascular pathway exists but differs in timing from England’s April 2026 rollout
NHS prescription charge £9.90 per item (standard charge, with exemptions) Free — no NHS prescription charge in Scotland for any medicine
Access route Tier 3 weight management via GP referral · QOF GP pathway for T2D · GP cardiovascular pathway for Wegovy Tier 3 weight management via GP referral · Discuss cardiovascular pathway with GP
Waiting times Varies by ICB — 12 to 24 months NHSGGC: 12–24 months for tier 3 weight management
Private prescribing Available from GPhC-registered providers like Slinic Available from GPhC-registered providers like Slinic — private prescriptions are valid in Scotland
The most important point for Glasgow patients: If you qualify for NHS Mounjaro in Glasgow, it is free. There is no NHS prescription charge in Scotland. This makes NHS access in Glasgow exceptionally valuable — but the 12–24 month wait remains the primary barrier for most patients. Private Slinic prescriptions are available immediately, at the same fixed 2026 prices as for any UK patient.

Glasgow’s Obesity and Health Crisis: The Scale of the Challenge

Glasgow has the highest obesity rate of any major UK city — approximately 34% of adults. But to understand what this means for individual patients in Glasgow, you need to understand the broader health context:

    The Glasgow Effect

The “Glasgow Effect” is a term used by public health researchers to describe the city’s significantly worse health outcomes compared to similarly deprived cities in England. Glaswegians living in deprived areas have substantially lower life expectancy than residents of equivalent deprivation in Manchester or Liverpool. The causes are complex and contested, but include higher rates of cardiovascular disease, alcohol-related harm, drug-related mortality, and — critically for our purposes — obesity and metabolic disease.

    Cardiovascular disease burden

Glasgow has the highest cardiovascular disease mortality rate of any UK city. This is directly relevant to weight loss injection access:

    • The NICE April 2026 cardiovascular approval of Wegovy (BMI 27+ with established CVD, no T2D) is particularly significant for Glasgow given this exceptional CVD burden
    • However, NICE decisions apply to England and Wales — not Scotland. Glasgow patients should ask their GP about the equivalent SMC cardiovascular pathway for semaglutide
    • Private Wegovy through Slinic is available immediately for Glasgow patients who meet the cardiovascular criteria — the same medication, same MHRA licence, same clinical benefit

    Deprivation and health inequality

Glasgow’s health outcomes are deeply unequal. The most deprived areas — Drumchapel, Possil Park, Springburn, Easterhouse, Shettleston, and parts of the Southside — have obesity rates exceeding 40% and life expectancy figures that are among the lowest in Western Europe. Weight loss injections represent a potentially transformative intervention for these communities — but access, cost, and awareness remain barriers.

Mounjaro Results: What Glasgow Patients Can Realistically Expect

Timepoint Average % loss (15mg) Real weight (100kg patient) What patients typically experience
Week 4 (Month 1) ~3–4% ~3–4 kg Appetite noticeably quieter. Food noise reducing. Scale beginning to move. Side effects typically mild at 2.5mg starting dose.
Week 12 (Month 3) ~8–9% ~8–9 kg Clothes fitting differently. Energy improving. Significant motivational moment as results become visible to others.
Week 24 (Month 6) ~14–15% ~14–15 kg Major physical transformation. Blood pressure, blood sugar, and lipids all typically improved. Joints and mobility greatly benefited.
Week 52 (Month 12) ~20–21% ~20–21 kg Health transformation. Most patients at 12 months report profound improvements in quality of life, energy, and physical capacity.
Week 72 (Month 18) 22.5% ~22.5 kg Full SURMOUNT-1 result. 57% of 15mg patients achieved 20%+ weight loss. Rate slows in months 12–18 — expected and normal.

Mounjaro vs Other Weight Loss Options in Glasgow

Option Average weight loss NHS availability (Glasgow) Private cost
NHS lifestyle services (tier 1 and 2) 3–5% Available via GP — no significant wait Free
Orlistat 3–5% NHS prescription — free in Scotland Free on NHS Scotland
Saxenda (liraglutide) 5–7% Tier 3 — 12–24 month wait in Glasgow ~£100–180/month private
Wegovy (semaglutide) 14.9–20.7% SMC approved — tier 3 via GP referral · free if NHS-prescribed in Scotland From £99.99 at Slinic
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) 22.5% SMC approved — tier 3 via GP referral · free if NHS-prescribed in Scotland From £139 at Slinic
Gastric band 14–17% NHS BMI 40+ — long wait in NHSGGC £5,000–£8,000 at Glasgow private hospitals
Gastric sleeve 20–25% NHS BMI 40+ — long wait £8,000–£12,000 at Glasgow private hospitals
Gastric bypass 25–35% NHS BMI 40+, complex criteria £10,000–£15,000 at Glasgow private hospitals

For Glasgow patients who can access NHS Mounjaro — it is free, and the clinical outcomes are identical to private treatment. The barrier is the 12–24 month wait. For patients who start privately at Slinic now and transition to NHS later, the overall cost is reduced while starting treatment 12–24 months sooner.

Mounjaro Eligibility for Glasgow Patients: Private Route (Slinic)

Route BMI requirement Conditions needed Qualifying conditions
Standard — no condition needed BMI 30+ None BMI alone qualifies at 30 or above
With qualifying condition BMI 27–29.9 At least 1 Type 2 diabetes · Hypertension · Cardiovascular disease · High cholesterol · Sleep apnoea · NAFLD · PCOS · Obesity-related osteoarthritis
Ethnic group adjustment BMI 27.5+ without condition BMI 23+ with 1 condition Same as above — South Asian, Black African/Caribbean, Chinese, Middle Eastern backgrounds

Glasgow has significant Asian, African, and Caribbean communities — particularly in the South Side (Govanhill, Pollokshields, Shawlands) and parts of the North and East End. For patients from these backgrounds, the adjusted BMI thresholds apply at Slinic. Mention your ethnic background at the assessment and our prescribers apply the correct criteria automatically.

Mounjaro for Glasgow Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

Glasgow has significantly elevated rates of type 2 diabetes compared to the Scottish and UK averages — driven by the city’s high obesity rates, significant South Asian community prevalence, and socioeconomic factors. For Glasgow T2D patients, Mounjaro has unique advantages:

    • Dual licence — Mounjaro is the only weight loss medication in the UK licensed for both weight management AND type 2 diabetes
    • Blood sugar control — SURPASS-2 trial showed 15mg Mounjaro reduced HbA1c by an average of 2.58% — exceptional glycaemic control alongside major weight loss
    • NHS Scotland T2D prescribing — ask your Glasgow GP whether Mounjaro is available through your practice’s T2D management pathway. Scotland’s prescribing guidance for T2D may differ from England’s QOF framework — your GP can advise on the current Scottish position
    • Medication coordination — as blood sugar improves with Mounjaro, insulin and sulphonylurea doses typically need reducing. Coordinate with your GP or Glasgow diabetes team throughout treatment

Mounjaro Dosing Schedule for Glasgow Patients

Month Dose Slinic price What to expect
Month 1 2.5mg £139.00 Starting dose — body adaptation. Appetite begins reducing. Modest weight loss. Side effects typically very mild at this initiation dose.
Month 2 5mg £165.00 First therapeutic dose. Appetite suppression significantly stronger. Weight loss accelerating. Brief GI side effects typical with dose increase.
Month 3 7.5mg £225.00 Mid-escalation. Visible transformation beginning. Cumulative loss typically 6–10 kg. Energy improving.
Month 4 10mg £255.00 High efficacy dose — 19.5% average total weight loss in trials. Many patients find 10mg their optimal maintenance dose.
Month 5 12.5mg £275.00 Near-maximum efficacy. Cumulative loss typically 15–20 kg. Well tolerated at this stage for most patients.
Month 6+ 15mg £285.00 Maximum dose. 22.5% average weight loss at 72 weeks. Rate of loss slows from months 9–18 as body approaches new equilibrium — normal and expected.

Mounjaro Side Effects: What Glasgow Patients Should Know

Side effect Rate at 15mg When What to do
Nausea ~32% First 2–4 weeks at each new dose Smaller, frequent meals. Avoid high-fat food. Eat slowly. Contact Slinic if severe — antiemetics can be prescribed at monthly check-in.
Diarrhoea ~23% First 2–4 weeks at each dose Dietary adjustment. Increase hydration. Reduce high-fibre foods temporarily. Seek review if severe or persistent.
Constipation ~17% Variable onset Increase fluid and fibre. Macrogol sachets if needed — available from Scottish pharmacies without prescription. Raise at monthly check-in.
Vomiting ~11% First 2–4 weeks at each dose Dietary modification. Contact Slinic urgently if unable to keep fluids down for more than 24 hours — dehydration risk.
Hair thinning Common with rapid weight loss (all methods) Months 3–6 Increase protein intake. Check ferritin. Does not require stopping medication — resolves naturally.
Fatigue Common early in treatment First few weeks at each dose Review calorie and protein intake. Usually nutritional rather than a direct drug effect.
Seek emergency help immediately for: Severe persistent abdominal pain especially radiating to the back (possible pancreatitis — attend Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, or your nearest Scottish A&E immediately, or call 999); facial swelling or difficulty breathing (possible allergic reaction — call 999); inability to keep any fluids down for more than 24 hours. In Scotland, NHS 24 (call 111) is also available for urgent but non-emergency concerns outside GP hours.

The NHS Bridge Strategy for Glasgow Patients

Given NHSGGC’s 12–24 month waiting times for tier 3 weight management, the bridge strategy is particularly valuable for Glasgow patients:

    1. Ask your Glasgow GP today for a tier 3 weight management referral to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde weight management services. Confirm the current waiting time. Remember that NHS Mounjaro will be free when it comes through.
    2. Start Mounjaro privately at Slinic immediately — assessment to delivery in 24–48 hours. Begin losing weight now rather than in 12–24 months. At £139–£285/month depending on dose, weigh this against the £0 NHS cost when your appointment comes.
    3. When your NHSGGC tier 3 appointment comes — transition to NHS supply. Your treatment is free from that point. Your Slinic monthly check-in notes provide a clear dose history for the NHSGGC team.
Making the financial calculation for Glasgow patients: If your NHS appointment is 18 months away, starting privately at Slinic for 12 months then transitioning to NHS costs approximately £2,000–£3,000 total. If you wait 18 months before starting, you lose 18 months of treatment time. Many Glasgow patients decide the health benefit of 18 months of earlier treatment significantly outweighs the private cost — particularly given the city’s high cardiovascular disease burden where earlier weight loss has proven cardiovascular benefits.
