Is the Wegovy pill on the NHS right now?
No. As of 2026 the Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide 25mg) is not available through the NHS. The MHRA approved it on 11 June 2026, but that licence only means it can be legally prescribed — it does not put the medicine on the NHS. NHS funding is a separate decision made by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which assesses whether a treatment is cost-effective for the health service. Until NICE completes that appraisal and issues a positive recommendation, the pill remains private-prescription only.
Approval ≠ NHS availability. An MHRA licence lets a medicine be prescribed. A NICE recommendation is what makes it routinely NHS-funded. The Wegovy pill has the first, not yet the second.
Why isn’t the pill on the NHS when the injection is?
This is where most confusion comes from, so it’s worth being precise. There are two separate NHS situations, and they are not the same medicine:
- Wegovy injection — already available on the NHS in specific circumstances. In 2026, NICE recommended injectable semaglutide as an NHS option for certain people with cardiovascular disease who are overweight or obese, to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. It’s also available through NHS specialist weight-management services under strict eligibility criteria.
- Wegovy pill (oral) — not on the NHS. It’s a different formulation at a different dose, and it needs its own NICE appraisal before any NHS funding can be considered. That appraisal has not concluded.
So the drug (semaglutide) being available on the NHS in one form does not mean the pill is. Each product and each use has to clear NICE on its own.
When could the Wegovy pill be available on the NHS?
There is no confirmed date. The most reliable guide is how long the injectable version took: roughly 18 months from UK approval to a NICE recommendation, and around two years to reach routine NHS prescribing. Applying that pattern to a June 2026 approval points to a realistic NHS window of 2027–2028 at the earliest — and only if NICE recommends it. A NICE appraisal typically takes 6–12 months or more after licensing, and timelines can be extended.

Who would be eligible if it reaches the NHS?
NICE has not set NHS criteria for the pill, so this isn’t confirmed. If it follows the injectable pathway, NHS eligibility would likely be restricted to higher-need groups — for example a BMI of 35 or above with a weight-related condition, accessed through specialist services — rather than open to everyone who qualifies privately. Private eligibility is broader: generally a BMI of 30+, or 27+ with a weight-related condition, with lower thresholds for some ethnic groups.
